Enteral Nutrition

To ensure proper nutrition, your body must be given the proper amount of sugars, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and water. Sugars and fats are used to give your body energy. Protein is used to maintain and repair body tissues. Vitamins, minerals, and water are also needed to help with these body processes. When someone is unable to eat enough of these nutrients, they may receive enteral nutrition.

Enteral nutrition (also known as tube feeding) is a liquid formula given through a tube in the stomach or small bowel. Tube feeding can be provided for a short or long period of time to people of all ages. Tubes used for enteral nutrition include: Nasogastric (NG) tubes, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes, gastrostomy (G-tubes), and jejunostomy (J-tube).

Medications and water may also be given through the feeding tube. The length of time you will need enteral nutrition depends on your condition and the reason your doctor has ordered the enteral feedings.

Your Nation’s Infusion at Home nurse, pharmacist, and dietitian will provide all instructions necessary regarding infusion techniques and procedures to maximize independence and minimize interference in your normal daily activities.
