Total Parenteral Nutrition

To ensure proper nutrition, your body must be given the proper amount of sugars, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. Sugars and fats are used to give your body energy. Protein is used to maintain and repair body tissues. Vitamins, minerals, and water are also used to help with these body processes.

Total Parenteral Nutrition (also called TPN) is a fluid containing these nutrients. It is administered into the bloodstream through an intravenous catheter in your chest or arm. TPN is needed when people cannot eat or absorb enough nutrients and fluids to meet their needs.

TPN is given through a central venous catheter placed in a large vein whose tip is near the heart. The large vein, near your heart must be used to prevent problems. TPN fluids are given with an ambulatory pump to make sure the correct amount is given. Your TPN may be infused around the clock or during a portion of the day.

Your Nation’s Infusion at Home nurse, pharmacist and dietitian will provide all instructions necessary regarding infusion techniques and procedures to maximize independence and minimize interference in your normal daily activities.
